Yoga

Yoga is an exercise style that has roots in India. It has been heavily influenced during its history by both the Hindu and Buddhist religions. Because of the religious influence traditional yoga is a meditational aid. It is supposed to relax and align the body to prepare the mind for meditation.

In Western culture yoga has taken on a less spiritual and more temporal role. We have adapted it, like many Eastern practices, by removing much of the holistic overtones that mark much of Eastern culture. While purists feel that this defeats the purpose behind many of the practices, such as martial arts, or in this case yoga; Western culture doesn’t operate under those principles, and teaching holism as part of a yoga class falls outside the scope of most aerobics instruction.

If you decide to take a yoga class, it will vastly improve your balance and flexibility. These are both areas in which yoga specializes. You can also use medicine balls or other weights to increase resistance for some of the exercises, increasing the workout those moves give you. Classes will often only meet once a week, so it’s important to find ones that you’ll be able to attend; skipping just a few can seriously set back the progress you’ve made.
