Workouts FAQs

What are Pilates?

Pilates are a form of exercises that are named after Joseph Pilates, a German who lived during the first half of the twentieth century. He developed them while staying in enforced confinement as an enemy national in England during World War I. Prior to World War II he moved to the United States and opened a studio in New York. He attracted dancer clientele, and Pilates spread throughout American ballet as a warm up mechanism. Recently they have moved into mainstream culture as a form of aerobic workout.

What’s the point of using a ball during a workout?

The purpose behind using a ball depends on what type of ball it is. The two most prominent balls are medicine balls and exercise balls. Medicine balls are used during exercise to increase the resistance in a set of motions; they are small and filled with sand or water in order to be fairly heavy. They increase muscle strength.  Exercise balls are large and filled with air. People performing aerobic exercises sit on them, instead of standing in some cases, or instead of sitting on a bench in other cases. In either situation, the ball forces the person to try and maintain a balanced position while the exercise they are doing shifts their center of gravity. This causes them to simultaneously strengthen their back and abdominal muscles while they exercise other muscles.

If I want to bulk up, should I look into aerobics?

The simplest answer is yes, but you’ll need more than aerobics. Aerobic exercise will not increase your muscle groups’ burst potential in the same way anaerobic workouts will. However it will strengthen your cardiovascular and respiratory systems, as well as providing an overall boost to both strength and endurance. These traits come in very handy when weight lifting, which is what you will be doing to directly bulk up certain muscle groups.
