Pilates Mat

A Pilates mat is much like the mat that is utilized in any form of aerobics. Joseph Pilates was philosophically in favor of not just breathing during exercise, but of being in full control of your breath and breathing forcefully. He formed Pilates exercises to include as many muscle groups at a time as possible, to promote overall fitness.

A normal Pilates mat is comprised of a polyethylene foam core that is surrounded by a vinyl covering. They are only an inch or two in thickness because Pilates do not involve high impact exercises. The purpose of the mat is merely to improve the comfort level of the person exercising, rather than as a safety measure, like a gymnastics mat is meant to be.

If practitioners do not use a Pilates mat, they are more than likely going to use another form of equipment, such as a chair or bench specifically designed to help with the exercise regimen. Seeing as how a mat is much cheaper than a specialty piece of furniture, and has less impact on the overall décor of a room, they are much more popular among those who can’t afford to designate an entire room for a home gym.
