Pilates
Pilates are a form of exercise that is named after a man, Joseph Pilates, who invented them. Joseph was a German, who lived in the early 20th century. The man himself called the method he came up with contrology because he was endorsing the use of the mind to control muscles. He asserted that intense concentration and mental focus could sculpt and tone the muscles.
Today Pilates can be learned by just about anyone, though the quality of training can vary significantly depending on who the teacher is. There is not a copyright on Pilates, so anyone can claim to teach them, making finding a legitimate studio something you need to do a little research to achieve.
Pilates exercises are very specific in motion and muscle group. For instance, while you are exercising your triceps, you may at the same time be flexing lower abdominal muscles and thighs. There were originally 34 different exercises in the routine. Since the inception of the practice that number has increased as individual teachers have come up with their own variants and additions to the regimen.
