Dumbell Workout

A dumbbell workout contrasts with bench pressing or barbell workouts because it allows each arm to operate independently. This creates a tension and balancing act that is lacking from exercises that utilize both arms at the same time. Why is that important you ask? Well most people have a dominant arm. So if they’re doing a workout with both arms, one arm is likely contributing more than 50% of the effort.

You solve that problem by replacing a set of barbell exercises with a dumbbell workout instead. For those that have never tried it, you may be surprised at how noticeably different each arm feels when doing the same exercises. You may even need to drop some weight on one arm while you build it up to be the equal of the other. But what comprises a dumbbell workout?

Well that’s simple, you can do all the same workouts with a dumbbell that you can with a barbell. For a bench press, you put one in each hand, position them as you would for a lift, and push up with both hands simultaneously. For curls, you can either curl both arms together or alternate sides. Nearly anything that you can do with both arms, you can do with each independently.
